Education System in Mainland China

Although this website mainly informs about the education system in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, a short overview about the education system in Mainland China shall be given here.

China's education system can be categorized into basic education, higher education, and adult education. Children have to obtain nine years of formal education. Generally, children attend primary school for six years. Then in secondary education, they spend three years in junior middle schools, and optionally another three years in senior middle school if they pass an examination after junior middle school [1]. As such, aspirants for higher education usually have received 12 years of education, but generally need to take a placement test that is called "National Higher Education Entrance Examination" or commonly in very brief Chinese, but generally need to take a placement test that is called "National Higher Education Entrance Examination" or in colloquial Chinese as 高考 (gao1 kao3) [2].
